2023 Record of Impact

Taking grassroots mobilisation beyond the major cities.

In the 2023 presidential campaign, UpNorth Ambassadors for Obi/Datti built a grassroots mobilisation network focused on reaching communities across Northern Nigeria.

2023 was more than a campaign for us. It was the building of a grassroots operating network.

01

Taking grassroots mobilisation beyond the major cities

In the 2023 presidential campaign, UpNorth Ambassadors for Obi/Datti built a grassroots mobilisation network focused on reaching communities across Northern Nigeria.

The movement deliberately extended its activities beyond major urban centres into hard-to-reach communities, particularly across parts of the North East and North West. Contemporary reporting documented the group's grassroots campaign activities and its effort to train coordinators across the 19 northern states.

02

Building a coordinated grassroots network

The movement invested in developing local leadership and coordination capacity. A three-day Leadership Workshop on Strategic Grassroots Mobilisation for Peter Obi was held in Jos to equip coordinators with strategies for organising and engaging communities.

Our approach combined community presence, volunteer mobilisation, local coordination, political communication and digital amplification, creating a structure capable of taking campaign activities into communities that conventional campaign structures could struggle to reach.

03

Community-centred campaigning

Our 2023 field record included grassroots engagement, community activities, youth mobilisation, rallies, meetings and other initiatives designed to create direct connections between the campaign and ordinary citizens.

This approach helped establish UpNorth Ambassadors as a recognisable grassroots support structure for the Obi/Datti campaign in Northern Nigeria. Public reporting at the time specifically described the organisation as undertaking grassroots mobilisation across the North and targeting hard-to-reach communities.

04

Digital and media amplification

UpNorth combined physical mobilisation with digital communication, using social media and campaign messaging to extend the reach of grassroots activities.

Research documenting political participation during the 2023 election also records the role of UpNorth Ambassadors' leadership in using social media to mobilise and educate supporters.

05

Beyond election day

The movement's activities did not end with the presidential election. In 2023, UpNorth Ambassadors was also publicly involved in post-election civic and democratic advocacy, including participation in demonstrations and calls concerning the presidential election litigation process.

The philosophy was simple

Go where the people are, understand the community, build relationships and organise locally.

This is not a coverage claim. It is the list of states and local governments for which there is a photograph on this site showing the work. It is the only geographic claim we are able to evidence.

Our 2023 legacy

The foundation that year established.

UpNorth Ambassadors' greatest achievement was demonstrating that a youth-led, decentralised network could take organised political engagement beyond Nigeria's major cities and into communities across Northern Nigeria.
